When Jesse Jackson ran for president in 1984, he resembled Barack Obama in some striking respects. A charismatic and compelling figure in his early 40s, Jackson leapt into the contest and forced America to wrestle with questions of political access and equal opportunity. In many important ways, however, Barack Obama is no Jesse Jackson—and that is a key to Obama's political appeal.
