摘要

I don't know jim mcgreevey well, and the few times I met him he didn't interest me much. He seemed like just another super-ambitious student-body-president type; the cliched glad-handing style and well-scrubbed-policy-wonk personality brought to mind a very minor-league Bill Clinton, without the cool. I found that he was smarter than I first thought, but not smart enough to make himself an especially successful governor, even before last week. And yet despite the scumminess of what he did (giving an important six-figure state job as head of homeland security to one's totally unqualified lover, gay or straight, is inexcusable), his story raises a couple of useful questions that go beyond the enduring confines of the closet: Why are the most ambitious so often the most self- destructive, willing to jeopardize everything (Clinton again) for some sex? And can we learn anything from their folly to bring better balance to our own lives ?
