Natural disasters have long rocked the Philippine islands. In 2011 more than 80 percent of all deaths around the world caused by natural disasters occurred in Asia-and the Philippines was at the epicenter, with 33 natural disasters, more than any other country in the world. Its largest, Typhoon Washi, claimed more than 1,200 lives in late 2011.
