More than 250 KiwiRail staff and contractors from around the country are working around the clock to urgently replace worn rail across the Auckland metro network. 'The work we are doing was anticipated as part of our $1 billion Auckland metro programme. However, recent testing has shown that damage is more widespread, and repairs required more urgently, than previously understood,' said Todd Moyle, KiwiRail's Chief Operating Officer. It is expected that more than 150km of rail will be replaced by February 2021. The current focus is on the NIMT between Panmure and Parnell, where a four week'block of line'which ended on 20 September saw 16.8km of rail and 4,099 sleepers replaced. A 40km/h speed restriction is in place across the suburban network while the work is done. KiwiRail, in conjunction with Auckland Transport, is trying to identify the cause for the problems and plan appropriate measures to meet future maintenance requirements of the suburban network.
