Barry Brickell's Railway

Barry was captivated. Later he wrote,'I was hardly prepared for the richness of the landscape and the beauty of the forests through which we passed at slow speed on that daylong ride in an open wagon .....One day I would have to create something like this myself.' When Barry died on 23 January, 2016, at the age of 80, he had fully built his dream, including establishing the thriving native forest through which the Driving Creek Railway now runs, just outside Coromandel township. On the way, Barry was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1988 New Year Honours list. In addition, on 30 March, 2014, the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ, now Engineering New Zealand) awarded him a Certificate of Merit for his innovation in the creation of engineering works: particularly, in pottery kiln technology and in building and equipping Driving Creek Railway.
