I was lucky that I was in the right place at the right time to be promoted to the next grade. When I went firing I had just got onto No. 2 roster, the shunt roster. I was on this for about nine months when all the blokes who had been serving overseas in World War 2 started coming back. There would have been 10-12 of them in Dunedin. They all had to be amalgamated into the rosters and this pushed some people down the roster. Some of these poor guys had no real clues or much experience and here they were out on express trains. They would come back in at the end of a shift as black as soot after having had a bad run.The NZR ended up by taking them all to Wellington and putting them through a school. They came back to us in a week or so's time as engine drivers. When they were overseas in Egypt only a few had anything to do with trains. There were good people amongst these returning men but there were also some who were hopeless.
