This has been a brief and personal introduction to and a review of the railway postcards available in the past 50 years, together with a few observations. Postcards from the 1800s and the earlier part of the 20th century form another topic again and worthy of a stand-alone article. Photographers such as Muir and Moodie, and Burton Brothers, produced many cards that featured or at least included a railway theme (e.g. man and dog outside Tuatapere station). Perhaps there is someone out there who can let the editor know (on a postcard of course) that they can cover that topic in a future issue. I hope that this article may encourage you to scan the postcard racks at information centres, tourist attractions and rail museums for current cards, and perhaps check out those available in second-hand shops. You might just find some relatively modern gems without breaking the bank - and start a wee collection of your own.
