On the night of 24 and 25 March 2012, torrential rain washed wood debris into culverts on the coastal section of the Napier-Gisborne railway near Beach Loop, causing embankments to over-top and wash out. The destruction was on a huge scale. Estimates to repair the infrastructure, along with many years of declining revenues, led KiwiRail management to decide that the line would not be reinstated, but that it would be mothballed north of the junction with the Napier Port Branch at Pandora. The last train ran from Wairoa to Napier on 4 December 2012, with 12 USQ wagons of sawn timber consigned to Ohinewai.
