A Big Step Forward for Carriage, WMR No. 48

In February 2020 the N Z Railway and Locomotive Society's veteran carriage restoration project took a marked visual step forward with the completion of signwriting on the body of the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company's (WMR) carriage No. 48 and the upholstering of the seats. Restoration is far enough advanced that we can gain a good impression of what we think No. 48 looked like when wheeled out of the WMR paint shop atThorndon in November 1906. When NZR took over the WMR on 7 December 1908 they inherited 56 passenger and dining cars. Of these 12 were built by WMR at their Thorndon car building shop between 1905 and 1908. Car No. 48 was one of the New Zealand built carriages, a second-class car built in 1906. Of the rest of the carriage stock, two were built by NZR at Addington and the others in the USA.
