7 AUGUST, 10 am. Everyone in Ottumwa, south-east Iowa, hopes for a day of sunshine. Everyone except Edgar Bering, that is. He is praying for a serious downpour. At this time of year, America's Great Plains experience some of the most violent storms on the planet. And above the rolling storms dance bewitching and mysterious light shows. Bering, a physicist at the University of Houston in Texas, and a team from NASA's National Scientific Balloon Facility are hoping to get a closer look at these lights. So they're preparing to send a giant balloon above a storm. It's in for a rough ride.
