Far-out ideas may be last hope for curbing global warming

Bizarre technologies for generating energy that were previously ruled out as pipe dreams will have to be developed if nations are serious about tackling climate change. That's the view of 18 influential energy analysts in the US, who argue their case this week in the journal Science (vol 298, p 981). They say none of the power-generation technologies being developed now will be able to control greenhouse gas emissions and meet the world's energy needs ― which may rocket by 200 per cent by 2050.
