The closest we've had to Tarzan: that's what the folks at his old lab in Oregon call SteveSillett. Sillett holds the world record forthe highest bow-and-arrow shot into a tree, and has even starred in an IMAX movie about California's wild adventurers. But he's no extreme sportsman. He'sa passionate biologist who climbsand studies the world's tallest, oldest and largest living organisms―2000-year-old giant redwoods in California. And the message he brings from atop the trees is ominous. Leave the remaining old forests alone or lose the astounding biodiversity that only millennia of growth can bring. Anil Ananthaswamy caught up with Sillett on the ground.
