Once upon a time, psychologists thought it was safe to assume that fundamental aspects of human brain function, such as visual perception, were hard-wired and common to everyone. Now we know that culture plays a big role in shaping our psychology (see main story). Nevertheless, there are still many big and important areas that, as far as we know, are common to every healthy human being.
