A battery made from wood could be the key to cheap, renewable power. Lithium-based rechargeable batteries are expensive to use on a large scale because lithium is scarce. So Hongli Zhu and colleagues at the University of Maryland in College Park used wood fibres to form the skeleton of a cheap sodium-tin battery. Thef ibres are pliant but strong, and can withstand the physical stresses of charging and discharging better than anything else tried so far.
