Your article on Dan McKenzie's contribution to plate tectonics dredged up a very unpleasant memory (25 November, p 41), In 1964,1 presented an address to the Geological Society of America showing evidence for a 10-million- year-old formation being offset some 80 miles by the San Andreas fault, Fellow scientists said my ideas were "absurd" and "impossible", that "faults cannot possibly have that much displacement" and "I suggest that you do your fieldwork again". The hostile reception my paper engendered resulted in me leaving the conference abruptly, very bitter over its rebuff.
