For Transport for London (TfL) project manager Ninarita Williams, a career in engineering and construction did not occur as an option when she was at school. But she hopes this will change for schoolchildren with similar views of the industry as more firms see the benefit of employing candidates through different routes of entry. "When I was growing up, it wasn't something I always wanted to do because I didn't see or know that many women in engineering roles. In fact, I didn't see many people that looked like me at all in those types of roles, so it wasn't a career I thought to be obvious to me," she says. "However, I knew I wanted to work in an industry where I could make some sort of social impact. I wanted to help solve real problems and, at the same time, hopefully make a valuable contribution."
