Surface water flooding continues to be a major challenge for the UK. Last winter, severe flooding across the country dominated media coverage for months with cars stranded, railway services disrupted and many homes and businesses destroyed. Following the impact of storms Ciara and Dennis earlier this year, the government was vociferously urged to do more to protect communities at risk. In July it set out its long term ambition to create a nation more resilient to flood risk. Plans outlined in its flood and coastal erosion risk management policy statement include funding of £5.2bn to create around 2,000 new flood and coastal defences. This investment is aimed at providing better protection for 336,000 properties in England by 2027, alongside support to help households and businesses recover from flooding more quickly.
