Peter Huchel's reception of Biedermeier literature in his poetry of the 1920s and 1930s

This article seeks to place Peter Huchel''s work of 1933 to 1945 into the context of non-Nazi writing suggested by Hans Dieter Schäfer. It draws on Huchel''s interest in the Biedermeier period, which is indicated by his wide reading of literature from this period, some of which is now held in the Peter Huchel Collection. Huchel''s early interest in the Biedermeier period has also been attested by his first wife, Dora Huchel. This article looks at works by three writers from the period, Nikolaus Lenau, Georg Büchner and Friedrich Hebbel, and compares them with poems written by Huchel in the 1920s and 1930s, examining similarities of style and content, and suggesting a continuity of certain preoccupations in Huchel''s poetry during times of political upheaval.
