The American Society or Naval Engineers was created in 1888 as U.S. nava, technology turned from sail to steam. The Society was formed in the interest ol publishing a journal to organize, with the ohjeet of printing the results of experiments, records of trial trips, breakdowns, etc., of ships of the Navy, and also tor the purpose of reading papers and discussing the debatable subjects ot naval engineering." Members of the Engineer Corps and recent graduates of the US. Naval Academy were recruited tor membership in the Society, and subscriptions and paid advertising were solicited for its journal. Five months after the rounding of ASNE. the first volume of the Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers was published. The Society and its journal received acceptance as the vehicle that brought naval engineering professionals together.rnFor 119 years, the Society's original objectives have been preserved and strengthened to meet the changing needs of a time-honored profession.
