Complex system design optimization is best accomplished in the early design phases with the use of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). In a software environment, this is typically accomplished with Unified Modeling Language (UML). Likewise, in a hardware environment, this is typically accomplished with System Modeling Language (SysML). The utilization of MBSE and analytical tools during initial design enables a more holistic view, and encourages knowledge development in team members with the use of architecture views and associated architecture models. Specifically, these modeling tools provide additional information and insight into design attributes through the exploration of and relationships with the architecture views. Additionally, since complex systems are increasingly more software centric, we must transition our traditional systems engineering approach to a more model-based environment, and maximize our utilization of architecture views and viewpoints to more fully explore the conceptual design of the system or System of Systems (SoS), as well as the relationships and interactions within the overall enterprise. This level of complex insight into the nuances of the architecture and associated functionality within the broader enterprise is only possible through the utilization of analytical tools and models. This article provides a very brief introduction to systems engineering, and advocates the utilization of models during the early design phase and throughout the life cycle of the system, SoS, and enterprise.
