PRESIDENT'S PAGE

Members and friends of our Society, it is again my privilege to take a few minutes of your time as you review this issue of our Naval Engineers Journal to mention a few things which are at the center of my attention. Because it remains so relevant, I would like to take these thoughts from my State of the Society address that was delivered in early July of this year. A little over a year ago when I took office as your President, the Council was wrestling with the recognition that changes in our operating environment necessitated a strategic change in our concept of operations in order for ASNE to remain fiscally viable for the future. We had just concluded a very successful year, and our financial reserves were stronger than they had ever been. However, projections for the future indicated significant operating deficits were very likely unless we could change our business model. We decided together to restructure our business plan and expand the methods by which we deliver services to the naval engineering community. Under the able leadership of Tony Lengerich, a committee of hard-working volunteers developed a new vision statement that was approved and implemented by Council. As a bonus, Tony agreed to fill the position of Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, the group that will oversee and monitor implementation of the plan he and his group developed. As we have discussed several times, the plan rests on four pillars: 1. Establish an electronically accessible, robust technical library of relevance to the entire naval engineering community.
