Having suffered heavily from avian influenza in 2004, Vietnam might now be brewing the next human flu pandemic. Yet, as Peter Aldhous discovers, local researchers don't have the resources to investigate the risk properly. Each year around the end of January, the swarm of motor scooters on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City thins out as offices and shops shut down. Tet, the lunar New Year festival, is a time for rest and family gatherings.
