The loss of function and death of neurons that occur in patients with Alzheimer's disease are traditionally considered to result from the accumulation in the brain of a peptide known as amyloid-β Little attention has been paid to the possible role of the vascular lesions that are also observed in such patients, because these lesions are generally viewed as a consequence rather than a cause of the disorder.
