摘要

Air pollution is one of the most important challenging problems to man in the past few decades due to rapid growth of automobiles and industries. Efforts are being undertaken to control air pollution at maximum extent. Raising suitable tree species in and around industrial complexes and road sides is one of the cost effective methods for the control of adverse effects of air pollution. The present study was aimed at to identify common air pollution tolerant tree species all over Tamil Nadu based on the analysis made at certain industrial cities. From the present study, it was recognized that the tree species such as Azadirachta indica. Ficus benghalensis, F. religiosa, Holoptelea integrifolia and Tamarindus indica are quite tolerant to air pollution, and can be used for plantation in industrial areas of Tamilnadu. However, for Coonoor, the Nilgiris, city lies in temperate climate, the other species such as Alnus nepalensis, Callistemon citrinus, Ficus tsjakela, Michelia champaca and Pinus roxburghii showed pollution tolerance.
