Following the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact the characterisation of NATO as the most successful Alliance in history became almost platitudinous. The primary argument for this description is that NATO actively contributed to the end of the Cold War and terminated the nearly half-century-long European partition. The Fiftieth anniversary of the membership of the Federal Republic of Germany provides the opportunity to draw attention to another great achievement of the Alliance, namely the peaceful integration of West Germany, and later the whole of Germany into the Western world. This way Europe could successfully transform into a stable continent, which is able to radiate this stability to its hither, and hopefully in the future to its thither vicinity.
