When the decision makers at Metal Shark Boats announced, in November 2011, that the company had been awarded a $192 million contract to replace the United Slates Coast Guard's (USCG) fleet of response boat-small (RB-S) vessels, they knew they would need to expand their Louisiana operations for the project. They also knew they would have to meet some pretty stringent requirements from the USCG. "Two main specification requirements drove our design," says Greg Lambrecht, vice president of Metal Shark, "and those were visibility and ergonomics. Visibility requirements dictated there could he no more than two degrees of obstruction for the coxswain in any direction. Many builders took this to mean that the coast guard wanted an open or center console type boat, but we did not. We considered the operating environments of all areas of responsibility and set out to design a boat that could comfortably work in Key West in the summer and Maine in the winter."
