Ford Mustang gets new engines for the 2011 model year, with the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 replacing the 4.6 in the GT and the newish 3.5-liter V-6, of Taurus/Fusion fame, finally replacing the ancient 4.0-liter V-6.rnTHE FIRST serious competition for General Motors'Voltec (Chevy Volt) extended-range electric motor technology may come from Lotus Engineering, which unveiled its Range Extender engine at the Frankfurt motor show in late September. It's a 1.2-liter three-cylinder "optimized between two power generation points" to provide 20 horsepower of electrical power at 1500 rpm and 47 horsepower at 3500 through its integrated electrical generator. The port fuel-injection, monoblock engine weighs just 123 pounds and was developed in a U.K.-led collaboration with Jaguar and Caparo Vehicle Technologies. Lotus intends to sell the powerplant to other automakers who want to get in the extended range business quickly.
