Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond visited the Crossrail Canary Wharf station construction site on 15 June, the clearest indication yet that the coalition government is pro-Crossrail. Questioned by journalists about whether the branches to Maidenhead/Abbey Wood or central London stations might be sacrificed in the drive to reduce Britain's financial deficit, the Transport Secretary said: 'We have no plans to change the scope of the scheme'.
