To weather the locomotive as realistically as possible, I applied a number of dark streaks made from black and brown powdered pastels on the fuel tank and down the sides on the hood. I also applied the powders to the truck sideframes and added dabs of rust colored powder sporadically around the engine. Finally, I wiped the sides of the body with a wide, soft brush dipped in brown and black powders to give the locomotive an overall dirty look.
