In amateur engineering workshops, the centre lathe is 'king.' and is often the main topic of conversation, with many of the projects being based on turned parts, or the modification of such machines to make them even more magical. But there are frequently other types of machine tools in the workshop, besides the centre lathe, and the mill/drill, such as the humble bench fly press. Apart from the straightening of bent metal bars, and the removing of tight, or rusty bushes, pins etc. The fly press deserves more than a second glance as it may also be used for various bending and forming jobs, often to a high level of precision. So I hope that this article on 'Bending Tools' gives the reader, some ideas of what can done with this simple machine. I've included in this article some basic theory, for the bending and forming of metals also the making of a typical Mdegree bend tool. A follow up article, will look at the tooling requirements to produce the curl that is associated with the humble door hinge.
