My interest is in clock-making and I have benefited over the years from the many useful articles that appear from time to time in various journals, not least the Model Engineer's Workshop. About fifteen years ago I built myself a wheel cutting engine based on illustrations of 18th century machines and on details in the 1989 Chronos catalogue. It worked fairly well but its major drawback was the necessity to make a new division plate each time I made a clock with a different wheel count. I used the laborious and error prone method published in MEW 4 in April 1991. A vision of what could be obtained with modern electronic methods was revealed by two articles in successive issues of the Horological Journal in October and November 2004. The first was by Tony Jeffree entitled "A CNC Headstock Dividing Attachment for the ML7" (similarly described in MEW issue 111) and the second was by Dick Stephen entitled "Making a CNC Dividing Head".
