A piece of 3/8 in. square M.S. was turned down at one end and screwed 5/(16) in. BSF to suit a knob which was found in the odds and ends box. It was then silver soldered into the slot milled in item 6 - photo 7. I had intended fitting a spring loaded detent to hold the engaged/disengaged position of the idler pinion but soon discovered that the turning effect wedged the pinion to a stall in one direction and considerable pressure was required on the handle to hold it in mesh in the opposite direction. Something more positive than a detent was required. To hold against the "winding in" effect, the holes for the three backplate guide pins were located with the idler correctly meshed with the 66T pinion so that the body of the pins acted as stop.
