A CHEAP AND SIMPLE TURNS COUNTER

I was in my workshop busy winding a spring in the lathe when a neighbour walked in and spoke to me. I looked up and lost count of the number of turns on the mandrel. This is something I have also done in the past, when winding coils. Then I remembered an article in a back issue of Model Engineer. Now the following idea is not mine entirely, I have back numbers of Model Engineer to 1960's and the calculator part I gleaned from one of them, which issue, I can't remember. The article, to which I refer, was about modifying a pocket calculator to use as a counting device, I tried out our home calculator to see if it would be suitable, but no, it operates on a different system.
