A NEW TOPSLIDE WITH HIGH-RESOLUTION ANGULAR READOUT②

The topslide of my Chinese lathe was a constant source of frustration. It was not particularly stable; when wound all the way forward the top dovetail was poorly supported and most annoying was that the riveted-on aluminum angle scale was badly dinged up and almost useless. While musing about replacing it I wondered whether some of our wonderful new digital technology could be used to provide a more accurate angle readout without breaking my bank account. The answer to this question was an enthusiastic 'yes' and I hope that the description of my journey to finding it will provide some ideas for others to carry forward.
