In the metal machining trades, aero engines for example, precision is probably 0.01mm and better. Because of this I would ask 'does the average home workshop owner really need to equip his or her workshop to that level?' The forum concentrated on the quality of the Chinese/ Indian products but I would suggest that possibly the term, precision, could have been attached by the company who were selling the vice, not the manufacturers. This reminds me about an earlier thread on a similar subject with a milling vice (so called) that did not live up to the users expectations. On viewing the website of the large supplier to the home workshop, I found the vice was clearly described as being suitable for light milling but this from the picture was obviously not the case and it should not have been advertised as such. Why then has this prompted me to produce this article? Well, most were saying that the purchaser should be prepared to spend more and obtain a genuine high quality vice. Unfortunately, such comments so often lose sight of the fact that many readers are setting up a workshop on a very limited budget. If not, why are so many mini milling machines being sold? Of course occasionally it may be a space consideration but almost certainly it is mostly financial.
