This type of reciprocating power hacksaw (photo 1) usually employs a dovetail type sliding arrangement to translate rotary action into a cutting motion. Because I intended to prefabricate this machine I opted for two sets of Phosphor Bronze bushes sliding on two round 5/8 inch mild steel bars. This system has proven very satisfactory for many years and only needs a few drops of oil on the bars during operations. Motive power is a 1/4 hp electric motor which is the single speed fully enclosed type. As these motors rotate at 1425 rpm, two step down stages were required to achieve an acceptable cutting speed. All the material and parts used were from my scrap box, except for the toggle switch and the new 14 inch machine hacksaw blade. I should say that I had bought an auction lot of redundant linen machinery which included several bushes, gears and castors etc., all for £5.
