On the vast majority of milling machines different tooling is attached using a hollow taper inside the machine's spindle. Rarer exceptions include some very small mills, such as the XO, which use a male taper in combination with a securing screw to hold small chucks. This month I will look at the common types of spindle taper and the tooling used with them.
