In this article, we have reviewed the MIMO technologies for the 5G cellular systems. In particular, we have summarized the MIMO studies in 5G new radio from 3GPP RAN-1 group. Following the agenda items in the 3GPP discussions, we have recapped the recent developments from MIMO studies on the following four aspects, namely, MIMO schemes, beam managements, CSI measurement and reports, and MIMO reference signals. Although some concepts or definitions are inherited from LTE, there are many new derivatives introduced in 5G new radio in order to support different functionalities for both low and high frequency bands. As we can see, MIMO technologies continue to the key feature in 5G new radio. With newly defined MIMO features and schemes, as well as many enhancements from LTE, we expect 5G new radio can achieve much higher system throughput with low latency.
