The last 15 months or so in perpetual emergency response mode have been incredibly challenging and there's no doubt the pandemic has had a major impact on the way we live and work.So, as we start to enter the next phase of the pandemic, it is important all of us in local and central government reflect not only on what has happened and what comes next - but, crucially, on what our roles in the coming months and years should be.Responding to a global pandemic at a local and regional level has required system leadership of the highest order. As council chief executives we are the collaborators and conveners; the glue that helps to ensure our people and places stick together. We can bring whole council resources to bear and ensure everything is joined up; for example, encouraging the whole health and care sector to focus on their role in the economy and environment of a place and ensuring the economy works for the improvement of people's health.
