Virtual meetings are well established now, but Diary is pleased the novelty still hasn't worn off for some. Leader of the Labour group on Erewash BC, Cllr James Dawson, was the centre of the pre-meeting chat as members gathered virtually for the Local Government Association's safer and stronger communities board last week. Cllr Dawson's choice of a battleship background - left over from a previous virtual engagement - caught the eye of his Labour party colleague, Westminster City Council's Cllr Tim Roca. 'Is it subliminal messaging having battleships in the background going into meetings?' Cllr Roca asked playfully. Cllr Dawson quickly cycled through some alternative backgrounds such as a more conciliatory peaceful meadow, before finally settling on a viaduct - a local landmark. The choice ended up being perfect for the content of the meeting, which was partly about building bridges between communities.
