I write regarding The MJ front page story, 'District mergers fuel structure shake-up' (24 January). As the strategic council in Staffordshire, with close working relations with three of the district councils mentioned in your article, it would be remiss of me to not add our views to this debate. This 'voluntary merging' appears to be driven, in some instances, by the desire to tackle financial difficulties. While this is understandable, there is a real danger that we could see a local government reorganisation by the back door.
