Despite constant reports about Britain's ageing population - and the inevitable rising levels of demand for social services resulting from it - funding remains short, and the care system is said to be on the point of'crisis'. Certain areas of the country are suffering more than others, with a larger concentration of older people and disabled adults, which has forced some councils to slash services and cater only for those with the 'most severe needs'. The Local Government Association has welcomed a report from national charity for older people, Counsel and Care, which highlighted both the shortfall in care for older people, which stands at around £25,000 per person, and the need for the Government to be more ambitious in its self-described 'radical rethink' of the care system.
