Belfast City Council becomes a new authority from 1 April 2015. And there's clear ambition from the top to embrace that change, and make the most of the opportunities it offers to place-shape this historic, vibrant and transformed city. With one of the most significant changes being the move of responsibility for planning from central to local level, the council is now looking for its first Director of Planning and Place. Suzanne Wylie, chief executive of the new council, says: "It's an exciting time for local government across Northern Ireland, and particularly for the city of Belfast as it is the economic driver for the region; the new responsibilities for planning, followed by regeneration, will help us better meet the needs of our citizens, and shape the future development and growth of Belfast." The changes will see Belfast expand its geographical area, becoming the biggest council in Northern Ireland with 333,000 residents. The city is 4th in the UK for Foreign Direct Investment and has £7.5m visitors each year. The plan is to continue this growth.
