Spending to rise by ￡6bn despite economic gloom

Local authorities plan to spend ￡112bn providing services during 2008/09 -￡6bn more than last year - indicating the economic downturn has not disrupted immediate spending plans as much as feared. Revised estimates of local authority spending for the current financial year, published on 30 October, show that net current expenditure across England is expected to be ￡112.1bn, compared with ￡106.3bn in 2007/08. That represents an increase of 5%.
