To describe 2005 as a landmark for Cardiff is somewhat of an understatement 'It's unique for two such significant anniversaries to fall together - it gives a great deal on which to focus,' says leader of the council Rodney Berman. The two anniversaries -Cardiff's centenary as a city and its 50th anniversary as the capital of Wales - are indeed providing a matchless opportunity. Although both events are of historic significance, they are providing a springboard from which the city is launching itself into the 21 st century. 'While people will be reflecting on what has happened over the past 100 years they will also be seeing major changes just five years from now,' says Cllr Berman who assumed leadership of the authority with a new Liberal Democrat administration that took charge in June 2004.
