More than 7,000 residents have taken up Sutton LBC's offer of grit to use on the footpaths, pavements and roads in front of their homes.The council has dubbed the move a major success as it steps up its winter service plans, in the face of predictions for another severe winter.Sutton's executive member for environment, Cllr Colin Hall, said: 'We have been overwhelmed by the response to our free grit offer. It has shown how, with a bit of imagination and public support, councils can come up with low-cost solutions to problems. If s also proved to be a great example of the Big Society in action.'
