The chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) has admitted weaknesses with the sector-led improvement approach despite his organisation having hailed it as a 'success story'. Quizzed about the effectiveness of the LGA's peer challenge process at the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) summit in Liverpool, David Sparks conceded he did not have an 'absolute answer'. Cllr Sparks was responding to Swale BC chief executive Abdool Kara, who queried whether the LGA sometimes 'pulled its punches' in peer reviews. Mr Kara said he thought peer challenges were sometimes not carried out very well, were not resourced enough and did not go deep enough, adding: 'I get worried when the LGA says that the process can provide assurance.'
