A Critical Look At Partial Least Squares Modeling

The first seed for this special issue on partial least squares (PLS) modeling was sown when George A. Marcoulides, editor-in-chief of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), submitted an Issues and Opinions article to MIS Quarterly (MISQ) about the presumed immunity of the method to distributional assumptions and that urged caution when using PLS with small sample sizes. As editor-in-chief of MISQ, Carol Saunders started a review process for the paper that turned out to be more problematic than any she had ever seen. Several reviewers turned down the invitation to review.
