There have been a number of different manual transmissions fitted to the Mini. All of them consist of gears fitted into an alloy casing mounted under the engine and sharing the same oil as the engine. The gearbox internals were developed from those fitted to inline A-series-engined cars such as the Austin A35 and Morris Minor. The earliest Mini gearboxes were very problematic due to having cone type synchromesh. This was changed to baulk ring three-speed synchromesh, and progressively introduced during 1962. Further improvements were made in the form of 'B' type gears and improved selector forks with a larger contact area - this was to the Cooper models although possibly not to some of the earlier ones but was extended to all models during 1964.
