European Scientific Cooperation and Research Infrastructures: Past Tendencies and Future Prospects

Since the 1960s, Europe has developed a diversified network of agencies and institutes in parallel with the political dynamics of the Treaty of Rome (1957). Recently, the European Commission has launched a debate about the future of European R&D policy. This has, in turn, highlighted the importance of research infrastructures in European science. This paper discusses the achievements of Europe's multilateral approach in this domain, and suggests guidelines for future policy.
